The way to become a sommelier
Becoming a sommelier in Austria is a comprehensive training programme that provides prospective professionals with a broad spectrum of knowledge. Participants learn everything a sommelier needs to know - from wine advice and service to wine cellar management. A central component of the programme is an understanding of the historical development and economic significance of viticulture, particularly in Austria. The Austrian wine law is also dealt with here. The curriculum also includes technical aspects of viticulture and cellar management as well as practice-orientated skills such as competent wine sales and assessment according to international standards. The training programme turns sommeliers into true all-rounders who not only know about wine, but are also very familiar with other beverages such as beer and distillates.
