But what exactly is firn snow?
Firn is a special form of snow that occurs at higher altitudes in spring. Sunlight or temperature fluctuations can cause the existing snow to partially melt and soften slightly during the day. At night, the surface freezes again to form a solid crust of ice. This more compact snow is called firn. It is generally harder and more compact than fresh powder snow and is well suited to skiing and snowboarding. Due to its texture, gliding on firn snow can enable a particularly pleasant and fluid movement when skiing. Firn snow is often best to ski on in the early morning or late afternoon, when it is still firm but not too hard.
